Why Play Rugby?

Rugby has been described as "A hooligans game played by gentlemen."  While the game itself focuses on hard hits and physical play, the rules and culture of Rugby focus on family and respect.  Respect for match officials and other players is ingrained into the rules.  Games at all levels, from High School to the top professional and international teams, are followed by Socials where both teams gather and eat a meal together.

Rugby is a sport for all.  Are you a giant among men with top speed of a slow shuffle?  Are you 90 pounds soaking wet ad 4 feet tall?  There is a rugby position for you.  Rugby is a team sport that requires players of all shapes and sizes.  As long as you are ready to put in the work there is a place for you on the pitch.

Safety.  Rugby is a contact sport and injuries can occur.  However, due to the nature of the game and an emphasis on safety in the laws of the game the rate of major injury is significantly lower that in football.  At the High School level all forms of head contact are prohibited.  And unlike foot ball there are no hard plastic pads striking soft joints.

Practice

We practice Monday, Wednesday and Friday from when ever the snow is gone until the first weekend in June.  Practices are held at Kletzsch Park in Glendale.  Practices go from 4:30 to 6:00pm.

Games

The schedule varies from year to year, but players should expect to play about 6 regular season games.  Games are held in lieu of practice and typically kick off at 5:30pm.  Our home games are held in Brown Deer Park or at the Gun Club Rugby Field, which is located along the lake front just north of Bradford Beach.

What You Need

Rugby is a sport that requires very little in equipment costs.  Players will need to provide a mouth guard, rugby style shorts, and cleats.  If you do not want to purchase rugby specific cleats any soccer cleat, or lower cut football cleat, will work.

Cost

Players must register with Rugby Xplorer prior to the first game.  This will register them with the club and with USA Rugby.  The cost for this currently stands at $114.35 and includes all club dues.  Players will be expected to participate in one fundraising drive a year, occurring around October.  Parent volunteers will also bee needed for each home game to prepare and serve the post match meal.
